Chapter Thirteen
A thick fog blanketed everything; it was so opaque that I could hardly see past my nose. I kept walking and walking, but just couldn’t get out of it. I was a prisoner inside this cold, humid mist. How long had I been wandering in circle in this strange foggy landscape? I searched my mind for some recollection of this place…a hint…but nothing came to me. I couldn’t remember anything. Neither could I recall how I had wound up here to begin with. And what was this place anyway?
I’m traveling in a dreamscape, I thought. Yes, that’s it! I’m dreaming! But no, I couldn’t be dreaming because if I had been, I’d be awake by now. Thinking I was dreaming usually never failed to wake me up. So if I’m not dreaming, where am I? It terrified me to have no idea whatsoever. I stared at the fog with a growing despair. What if I never found my way back? What if I remained a prisoner here? No, I would escape this place, I firmly decided.
As I began searching the fog for a way out, I became aware of a subtle change in my surroundings. The silence, which until now had been total, wasn’t anymore. Sound was filtering through the foggy blanket. Head cocked, I concentrated my entire attention on it. A humming came from my right, a low throaty chant. Thinking it might lead to an exit, I ran in the direction of the chant. For a while nothing happened; the fog remained just as thick as before and didn’t allow me to see past a pace or two in front of me. But as the chanting increased in volume, the fog thinned out and a bright beam of light pierced through, blinding me. When I raised my arm to shield my eyes, pain tore through my chest.
“Aaah,” I cried out.
I felt a hand gripping mine and flinched.
“Finally,” a woman’s voice whispered softly near my cheek. “It’s about time you woke up. Open your eyes, Amir. Come on, open them.”
I did, only to close my eyes again immediately after. “Oh, the light…too bright,” I complained.
Squinting, I cautiously reopened my eyes. At first, all I could distinguish were blurry shapes, but as my vision adjusted itself to the light, details became clear. I recognized Lilloh sitting on a small stool beside the bed with Milo by her side. The young eunuch looked so relieved that he seemed on the verge of tears.
Lilloh smiled at me. “Welcome back, Amir.”
Where did I go? I wanted to ask her, but for some reason my mouth refused to work. And what was that horrid burnt stench choking the air?
Lilloh gave my hand a light squeeze. “Hang on a little longer; it’s almost over.”
I watched her nod to someone on my right. The low chant rose again. I tried to turn my head to look in that direction but failed to move an inch. I was too weak. So I peered around as best I could and managed to spot two shamans approach the bed.
